NEW HOMES

Katie and Ginger are now in their new homes.

It has been a difficult morning with horses not loading. Though I do not like the idea have having to use any methods, we did have to give Ginger some B-Kalm and Katie 5cc of Acepromazine. We still had to get some way to get them loaded in the trailer while in their stuper. We took out our lunge line and clipped it to one side and when the horses were near the the door the line went behind their legs and they stepped in. It was disappointing with Ginger because we worked her over and over in the fall and was able to load her. I don't know may be she knew she was going. We really did not want to see her go but she wouldn't get ridden and she NEEDS to be ridden.

So we left later than we wanted and it was snowing pretty hard, too. Not something neither of us wanted because of road conditions. But with Mr.Truck Driver Barry behind the wheel it went fine. Katie ended up getting dropped off first in Jordan. They put her in with a whole bunch of new friends. So I am sure she will forget the ones she had here first. Then off to Cambridge to drop Ginger off. Guess the gal that will be riding Ginger has been smiling from ear to ear and very excited that her husband bought her Ginger for a Christmas present. She took Ginger in her new pasture and showed her around. Rather cute. She didn't want any help at all with her THAT is how excited she was AND she was already to tack her up and go for a ride. My advice was get to know her and ride her at a slow pace so you can get familiar with everything she does. I just hope Ginger will be a great horse for her as she was for us. SHE will be missed.

It has been very hard to see any of the horses we have had go. Ask if I kept it together when we dropped them off?? NOPE!!

We/I will get use to it and hope that everyone will keep in touch with us.

SOON TO SAY...Good bye =(

Ginger....Now this one we will miss the most. Oh Tori was another one that we miss a lot but Ginger was our first saddle up, go for a ride horse. In 4 years we have worked her to the point she has become an awesome trail horse. The decision to sell her was very hard. She was going to be our back up horse for when we become "full" members to our Counties Mounted Patrol. But we have 2 now that are going to need tune ups and that will take up most of our time. all Ginger would do it sit. She needs to get ridden to keep you on the path of being a REAL good horse. We don't have anyone else to ride her and it wouldn't be fair for her to just sit. She is leaving us on Sunday to her new home. She is going to an Artists home. AND he is a great one at that. He does air brushing, pencil, etc. What is so cool about this...his specialty is horses and of course other animals. I am so excited but yet Sunday will be a sad day.

Katie....She was actually our first horse we were able to bring home and say "Now we are horse owners!". She was almost 2 years old when she came to us. Our plan was to have her trained for Brian to ride. But as more horses came the time he had was less. Now we had 3 horses to train. Kate is our last "original" one to see go. She is 6 years old now and she really needs a job to do. So I gave her away.... She is headed to the Minnesota Apple Orchard and she is going to be a trail horse for their riding stable. We will miss her. She became such a big, stocky pretty faced girl. I hope they love her like we have.

WHY WE LOVE CHILDREN

1) NUDITY I was driving with my three young children one warm summer evening when a woman in the convertible ahead of us stood up and waved. She was stark naked! As I was reeling from the shock, I heard my 5-year-old shout from the back seat, 'Mom, that lady isn't wearing a seat belt!'

2) OPINIONS On the first day of school, a first-grader handed his teacher a note from his mother. The note read, 'The opinions expressed by this child are not necessarily those of his parents.'

3) KETCHUP A woman was trying hard to get the ketchup out of the bottle. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. 'Mommy can't come to the phone to talk to you right now. She's hitting the bottle.'

4) MORE NUDITY A little boy got lost at the YMCA and found himself in the women's locker room. When he was spotted, the room burst into shrieks, with ladies grabbing towels and running for cover. The little boy watched in amazement and then asked, 'What's the matter, haven't you ever seen a little boy before?'

5) POLICE # 1 While taking a routine vandalism report at an elementary school, I was interrupted by a little girl about 6 years old. Looking up and down at my uniform, she asked, 'Are you a cop? Yes,' I answered and continued writing the report. My mother said if I ever needed help I should ask the police. Is that right?' 'Yes, that's right,' I told her. 'Well, then,' she said as she extended her foot toward me, 'would you please tie my shoe?'

6) POLICE # 2 It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. 'Is that a dog you got back there?' he asked. 'It sure is,' I replied puzzled. The boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, 'What'd he do?'

7) ELDERLY While working for an organization that delivers lunches to elderly shut-ins, I used to take my 4-year-old daughter on my afternoon rounds. She was unfailingly intrigued by the various appliances of old age, particularly the canes, walkers and wheelchairs. One day I found her staring at a pair of false teeth soaking in a glass. As I braced myself for the inevitable barrage of questions, she merely turned and whispered, 'The tooth fairy will never believe this!'

8) DEATH While walking along the sidewalk in front of his church, our minister heard the intoning of a prayer that nearly made his collar wilt. Apparently, his 5-year-old son and his playmates had found a dead robin. Feeling that proper burial should be performed, they had secured a small box and cotton batting, then dug a hole and made ready for the disposal of the deceased. The minister's son was chosen to say the appropriate prayers and with sonorous dignity intoned his version of what he thought his father always said: 'Glory be unto the Faaather, and unto the Sonnn, and into the hole he goooes.' (I want this line used at my funeral!)

9) SCHOOL A little girl had just finished her first week of school. 'I'm just wasting my time,' she said to her mother. 'I can't read, I can't write, and they won't let me talk!'

10) BIBLE A little boy opened the big family Bible. He was fascinated as he fingered through the old pages. Suddenly, something fell out of the Bible. He picked up the object and looked at it. What he saw was an old leaf that had been pressed in between the pages. 'Mama, look what I found,' the boy called out. 'What have you got there, dear?' With astonishment in the young boy's voice, he answered, 'I think it's Adam's underwear!'

What nice MEA weekend.....

It was a fabulous MEA weekend. The family I use to Nanny for came up for 4 days. It was so much fun. The highlight of the whole weekend it that we saw a wolf on the driveway and then later that night Barry started to howl. There had to be about 5-6 wolves howling back. COOL! Then we went to explore the big bog that we have nearby. NEAT!

Dad.....

He continues to do well. He now has the Okay to drive again. Good thing, too, because he drives Mom nuts by being that "back seat" driver. Though he never says anything when I drive =)

Sad news...

We have sold our 3 year old Appaloosa. It is not what we really wanted to do but we didn't have the time to train her and she needed to have something to do. Someone came out to see her Saturday and fell in love with her. I delivered to to her new owner on Monday. We will miss her terribly and we hope that the new owner will stay in touch with us so we know how and what she is doing.

"Law of the .........."

I recently received a comment about my post, The Law of the Garbage Truck. The comment was from Chris... Thank you for letting me know about the author, Chris. I have since then checked out David's blog.

So everyone..Check out www.davidjpollay.typepad.com

***And if anyone is following any of the updates about my Dad...He continues to do well. We had a minor issue arise but he is doing good! We found out that every time he would exercise and push himself, he would complain about some discomfort or burning in the upper chest area. He had to visit the ER while he was at Rehab. All his tests and Xray checked out normal. But the Doctors at the St. Cloud Hospital suggested he come in for the night just to make sure there were no new developments. They had him do a stress test. Come to find out that the area of his heart that has the bad block is what is causing him to have this sensation. What has to happen is that he needs to do these exercises so new blood vessels for in that part of the heart so it can receive the oxygen it needs. Weird but Okay, I get it. They have added more meds to what he already takes and increased some of the ones he started out with.

Also, they decided to "fine tune" his ICD. That was scary and I am sure he was a little nervous because they pretty much had to put him "cardiac arrest" again to make sure the ICD did its job and zapped his heart to beating normal. It did its job! He did have to be somewhat put out for this because they said it would hurt. My poor Dad has been through so much these last 6 weeks. We hope that things will be a little back to normal soon.

The next news is that I have made a decision, rather late in my life, but what the heck, better late than not at all. I am checking into becoming a CPR/Heart Saver Instructor. I saved my Dad by using CPR and I feel that I need to get a message out there. You may someday have to help someone by doing CPR and you can't just sit there. It may work and it may not but you will never know if it worked or not if you don't at least try.

LAW OF THE GARBAGE TRUCK

Someone emailed me this and I had to share...

One day I hopped in a taxi and we took off for the airport. We were driving in the right lane when suddenly a black car backed out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded, and missed the other car by just inches! The driver of the other car whipped his head around and started yelling at us. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. He was really friendly.

So I asked, “Why did you just do that? This guy almost ruined your car and sent us to the hospital!”

This is when my taxi driver taught me what I now call, 'The Law of the Garbage Truck.'

He explained that many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it and sometimes they'll dump it on you. Don't take it personally. Just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. Don't take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the streets. The bottom line is that successful people do not let garbage trucks take over their day. Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets, so ... Love the people who treat you right. Pray for the ones who don't. Life is ten percent what you make it and ninety percent how you take it!

Have a blessed, garbage-free day.

NEWS

Bonnet.....

We welcome GENUINE LIL BONNET! She is such a super sweet horse. We decided to search for another horse and had hopes of finding another one that was registered. We did! Bonnet was listed on craigslist and we could not believe how much this gal was selling her for. Her pedigree can be found on www.allbreedpedigree.com/genuine+lil+bonnet She has some great breeding and she will make a super Mounted Patrol horse for Barry. She is 5 years old and the training she has is unbelievable. All she needs is a tune up.

Dad.....

He is doing great!!! He doesn't have to have PT, OT or Speech Therapy. He is going to Cardio Rehab 3 times a week. He thinks he is going Deer Hunting this year. However we first have to see what the Doctor says on November 3rd.
The other news we found out is that he does have other build up in some arteries in the heart. But he does have medications to help slow it down. That we will take because we feel what he did was a warning sign that something was wrong and it was time to get it checked. Now we will be on top of it!

Emerald, WI

We are just a bout ready to head out and drive to Emerald, WI. We found a horse online that we are interested in. She is well bred, trained, and 5 years old. She will make an awsome Mounted Patrol horse.

So today we leave to Emerald, WI and we will spend the night somewhere in New Richmond. Pick up the horse tomorrow and drive back. I will post more and put a picture of her next week. Also, will do a Dad update.

Stay turned.....

Dad Update

Time for the Dad update...

The prayers did it! My Dad is doing great!!

The Sunday after he went into Cardiac Arrest they started to wean him off all the drugs he was on to bring him around. The first thing they did was to see if he could breathe with out the respirator. Then they removed the tube. They wanted to know how is mental state was but with the report we were getting that he was able to identify everyone and say he wanted out...THAT was a good sign. Before I go on...Sunday was the first time I had seen my Dad since this all started. I, of course, lost it when I seen him lying there all hooked up, tube down his throat, and so out of it. Very hard to see.
Anyway, he was awake and during the week everything happened so fast. He still was without food and you could tell he was so hungry but his swallowing reflexes were not the best yet. Then they got out of bed to sit in a chair for a while. He liked that but it was still tough to see someone so independent become dependent. By Thursday he was whisked away and they put in a Medtronic Device called a Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator. They felt that what triggered this whole thing was "electrical". In fact wherever this is in the brain, Dad did suffer some slight injury but it will heal in time. Dad was discharged out of CCU and moved to Telemetry and stayed there for a couple of days. After that he went right into Rehab. He improved so fast that he claimed his independence and was ready to go home. So last Friday he refused the wheelchair and wanted to walk out of the hospital. That he did!
He is home now. Off and on he talks with us about what had happened. He then told us that he saw a light at the end of the tunnel. Someone was standing in this light but didn't get to see who it was. I told him maybe it was someone keeping him from entering because it was not his time to go. Or maybe it was someone leading him to it. I guess I would like to look at it the other way.
Now that he is home he will be continuing his recovery with Cardiac Rehab, Doctors appointments and eating healthy. We all will be. We will take this one day at a time and thank God for everyday he gives us with Dad.

Please, Please...PLEASE!

After these last 5 days it is really starting to sink in that my brother, Tom and I used 2 person CPR to save our father. I can't stress enough the importance of taking a class. Be certified because you never know...

As of today my Dad is doing good but we still have a long road ahead of us. The Doctors say it is very positive. Will he be the same? We don't know but we will do whatever it takes to help him through this.

I will have to post an update soon as to what has happened in the last 5 days. The prayers are still needed...they are working.

Dad....

This is probably the hardest thing for me to do. But I am here alone right now and need to kind of "vent", more in a sad way. This is a day I need to mark down because it will be one we as a family will never forget.

My Mom woke me up this morning saying Dad collapsed. My God! I went into actions thinking it was an injury or something. But I went out side to the porch and there we was lying there. I am not going to go into details because it's a picture I kind of want to erase. My Dad was unresponsive. I shook him, nothing. Told Mom to dial 911 now. She woke up my brother and he rushed out. Between him and I we started CPR...I started the compressions and he kept Dad's head tilt back and tried to keep his airway open. I kept these compressions going until help arrived and they took over. Again I won't go into detail as they worked on him. When he left they had him breathing and a pulse.

He made it to the hospital and then airlifted him to another with a great cardiac unit. I will have to kid my Dad for flying in a helicopter and he wasn't too wake to know it. Anyway, he did make to that hospital which is a real good sign. They said he did indeed go into full cardiac arrest. He had a very bad clogged artery. So right now they have cooled him down to keep him paralyzed, his color is good, heart rate and blood pressure normal. There was no damage to the heart. They told Mom that they do not anticipate any problems for the next couple of days. They will start the process of warming him up on Sunday and we will go from there.

The outlook...too early to tell but without the first onset of CPR and then the defib...

She's back but....

Rheeya is back. We found her at the pound. I guess she was picked up that night both dogs ran off. AND we drove around, too. After 10 days we decided to call H.A.R.T. which a our local shelter. I gave them the description of Rheeya and Digger. They told me they had a black lab/mix female that was brought in on July 26th around the County Rd 1 and 66 intersection. They told me she was the only one picked up. So where is Digger???

The next day I went down to the shelter and yep, it was her. $160.00 dollars later we bailed her out of the shelter's jail and brought her home. It is still hard to try and be happy and sad at the same time because Digger is still gone. We hope that someone has him. Either they are waiting for someone to place an ad for a reward or what... We keep checking in with the shelter to see if he has been either picked up or turned in. We just don't know where to look anymore. We are trying not to think the worst.

We are still holding out hope.....

Oh, Rheeya....

The weekend had its ups and downs. Today Barry and I loaded the horses in the trailer and took them for a ride. Reason being is because we have been working with one of the horses because she didn't like loading. When we came back we went for a 3 hour ride. Did some ditch riding to keep up on the desensitizing with road/traffic noise. Went rather well today. Kind of kept our minds off the down side of the weekend.

Barry and I took in a stray because SOMEONE we knew did not want her. We gave her a real good home and loved her as our own. My brother Tom picked a stray to save him from a jerk and brought him home. We named him Digger for the fact he sure did like to dig! Digger and Rheeya shared a kennel but the problem is that when you let those two out they would run off. Usually they would come back. One winter day they were let out and off they went. Thought they were gone for good until Barry went, 20 hours later and found them miles from home on a road. Saturday Barry thought that if they were let out they would run some and then even if they ran off they will come back. Not this time. They ran off and we haven't seen them since. Now we are going on about 30 hours and we have not seen them. Oh we went out yesterday and searched the best we could but turned up nothing. They could be just about anywhere in our area. Our worry is that we hope they will find stuff to eat and avoid getting hit by vehicles. One thing we will do is keep our eye out for them in the paper. Maybe someone would be kind enough to throw an ad or take them to HART.

We will miss you Rheeya....hope you come home soon! =(

Just Awesome....

ONE LONG RIDE
Girl with a mission traveling across state on horseback
By AMY FREDMAN
Staff intern
E'leese Madgett-Manrique is on a mission.

The 12-year-old from Buffalo, Minn., has been riding her horse all summer, which is not unusual for a girl with a passion for horses.

The difference is that E'leese is riding across Minnesota to raise money for "The Ranch," a place where soldiers can go to rest, relax and heal at no cost.

On Tuesday, E'leese rode her horse, Chips N' Salsa, a 16-year-old full-blooded Arabian, through Pequot Lakes. On Thursday, she was to ride in Brainerd, entering from the Paul Bunyan Trail at 1 p.m. and riding down Laurel Street.

"It's her mission, just like the soldiers'," said mom Kerry Madgett, who gave up her job and sold her car, house and furniture to pay for the ride.

On her 86-day trek across Minnesota, E'leese's goal is to ride 860 miles and raise $16 million for The Ranch, which breaks down to $3 for every Minnesotan.

"It's less than a cup of coffee," Kerry said. "We can't tell our military we won't pay that."

The idea came on a trip to Colorado last summer. When E'leese saw mailboxes with flags honoring military personnel, she knew she wanted to do something.

"I thought it would be something manageable, like passing out phone cards," Kerry said. "But I told her, whatever it is, be passionate about it, and passionate and horse are the same word in her mind."

The idea started as a nationwide trek, but Kerry eventually narrowed it to just Minnesota. From there, E'leese got into the act. She sent letters to area business people, who then donated the truck, trailer and other necessary items for the ride. E'leese also sent letters to top officials, including first lady Laura Bush, Gov. Tim Pawlenty and the King of Arabia.

"The Ranch," E'leese said in her mission statement, "will not be fancy, in fact it will be humble. Just like the men and women that serve their country. ... The Ranch will be a number of cabins surrounding a lodge and dining room. Soldiers can spend the day lounging around, taking a walk, going for a swim or taking a horse out for a ride. Do ranch chores or relax, read a book or have a good conversation, be our guest. For those who do so much for others, we thank you."

E'leese and Kerry envision that The Ranch will be run by volunteers, namely college students. The two already have details for The Ranch planned out, and most "come from us lying in bed at night and talking," Kerry said.

Kerry said that such facilities exist, but they date back to World War II. "They're gross," E'leese added of the condition of the facilities.

E'leese is determined to complete her journey. Saturday marks the halfway point, which Kerry said will help convince people that E'leese's summer-long ride is achievable.

"It's not just our ride, it's Minnesota's ride," Kerry said.

E'leese, who has been riding since age 9, began her trek on June 7, two days after she finished her last day of sixth grade, and if she successfully completes the journey, she will start school two days after she gets home.

E'leese's goal is to gain exposure for The Ranch. Pawlenty spoke about E'leese on his radio program, and on June 5, Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., read E'leese's goal on the floor of Congress. Also, the government has granted a congressional flag to be flown at The Ranch and the Ojibwe conducted a tribal ceremony for E'leese, awarding her and her horse with eagle feathers. E'leese also was awarded a Blue-Star Mother pin.

But E'leese still is only 12. After finishing her ride through Pequot Lakes, E'leese was most excited to dismount her horse and eat an ice cream cone.

"She really doesn't care about the media, press or fame. It's a job," Kerry said. "She gets bored giving interviews. She's 45 one minute and 12 the next."

For E'leese, "sleeping in" is sleeping until 9 a.m., which is only on rare days off. And on days off, despite her time riding each day, E'leese still chooses to ride.

E'leese and Kerry haven't been home since the beginning of the ride, and while they may be as close as 20 miles from home, the two are committed to staying on the road.

"Soldiers don't get to go home," Kerry said. "...We are doing the same thing on a much less level."

People from the mounted patrol now accompany E'leese on her ride, and one woman from the mounted patrol helps organize places for E'leese and Kerry to stay.

"They get as much credit as E'leese and I ever will," Kerry said. "Minnesota has great people.

"We're paid every day in kindness." Kerry said after tearfully telling a story of an elderly couple whose grandson is in Iraq. The couple ran from their fields to greet E'leese and donate to The Ranch. "We go to bed very rich. Dirty and tired, but rich."

E'leese will complete her ride Aug. 31 at the state Capitol. Donations may be made at www.onegirloneride.com or at any Wells Fargo bank.

PASSED!!

I am excited to say that Grace and I have passed the test for the Mounted Patrol. Whew! I was not sure if she would have because she had such an attitude all week. Was stubborn loading in the trailer. Didn't want to move forward by herself and only moved forward when she followed another rider. GRRR! But when it came to test time....she did it! And did it well. Couple things she needed coaxing but she did it. We have passed.

I will have to post pictures and what was on the test at a later time.

*UPDATE* on Windchill Colt

'Windchill' the colt passes away

He was supposed to be the little horse that could.

Found half-frozen and near death, "Windchill's" story warmed the hearts of people the world over.

We're sad to report the nine-month-old colt died Friday night.

Volunteers say he showed signs of improvement early last week as he recovered from malnutrition, dehydration and hypothermia.

Below is a statement posted on Raindance Farms website regarding the death of Windchill:

"It is with broken hearts that we say this...last night between 9pm and midnight, February 29th, 2008, one of the bravest souls we have ever had the honor of knowing crossed over the rainbow bridge. He passed quietly in his sleep, surrounded by his two sisters, Kisses and Sunday, at the only real home he had ever known. There are no words to describe the loss and emptiness that we feel. Earlier in the evening he had his weekly check up and blood work done, with normal temperature, normal heart rate, and lots of weight gain since his last check up. The experts warned us from the beginning not to get our hopes up, because the odds were just overwhelmingly stacked against him. We never told Windchill that. We accepted each day with him as a gift, we watched his progress in awe - as did the entire nation. This little horse became a beacon of hope for so many who had lost their faith in humanity. He taught us that no matter what happens in your life, no matter how unfair, you can still have faith and you can find love to carry you to a better place. He found the good in the world. After cremation, he will be brought home for a proper burial. Once the tears have eased up and we can think clearly again, we will be starting a foundation in his honor. His brave fight will not have been in vain."

A Heartwarming Story

Colt, 'Windchill,' warms hearts in Wisconsin

More on Windchill, Rain Dance Farms

**Link(s) are intended as an information source and do not imply an endorsement of any particular product or point of view by KARE 11 News.

A cold colt is warming hearts in northwest Wisconsin.

The colt was found near death but by Friday night he had a new home.

Even for the toughest of horses, a Midwest winter can take its toll.

The animals are left to bear the brunt of freezing days and below zero nights and occasionally they succumb to it all.

"His body heat had created a crater, you know he had melted down into the ice," said Jeff Tucker of Raindance Farms southeast of Duluth.

Two weeks ago Saturday, with the wind chill at 30-below zero, they attempted the rescue of a nine-month-old colt.

"People say his legs they must have been really stiff, they weren't just stiff they were frozen solid, you could knock on them, they were literally ice cubes," explained Tucker.

Now two weeks later thanks to legwarmers, plenty of blankets and prayers the once frozen colt is alive and recovering.

The support for him is worldwide.

The ranch has been inundated with phone calls, faxes and emails.

A webcam is even setup so well wishers can keep an eye on him.

Around 6:00 is the best time for viewing when he's hoisted in a sling to help him stand.

"He just intuitively seemed to know that we were trying to get him up," said Tucker.

Well below his normal weight it still takes six people to lift him.

All the warmth is a far cry from the cold afternoon the day he was found, but the memory of that day will stick.

"We should call him Windchill and it just caught on, his eyes lit up, he seemed to like it," Tucker said.

Windchill, the weather he refused to succumb to, is his name.

"I think he's living, breathing, hope on hooves."

It appears Windchill is on his way to surviving another Midwest winter.

No charges have been filed in the case.

In case your wondering, Windchill is a Walkaloosa part Tennessee Walker and part Appaloosa.

Gotta Love Minnesota

It’s winter in Minnesota
And the gentle breezes blow
Seventy miles an hour
At twenty-five below.

Oh, how I love Minnesota
When the snow’s up to your butt
You take a breath of winter
And your nose gets frozen shut.

Yes, the weather here is wonderful
So I guess I’ll hang around
I could never leave Minnesota
‘Cause I’m frozen to the ground.

PET RULES

To be posted VERY LOW on the refrigerator door - nose height.

Dear Dogs and Cats,

The dishes with the paw print are yours and contain your food. The other dishes are mine and contain my food. Please note, placing a paw print in the middle of my plate and food does not stake a claim for it becoming your food and dish, nor do I find that aesthetically pleasing in the slightest.

The stairway was not designed by NASCAR and is not a racetrack.
Beating me to the bottom is not the object. Tripping me doesn't help because I fall faster than you can run.

I cannot buy anything bigger than a king sized bed. I am very sorry about this. Do not think I will continue sleeping on the couch to ensure your comfort. Dogs and cats can actually curl up in a ball when they sleep. It is not necessary to sleep perpendicular to each other stretched out to the fullest extent possible. I also know that sticking tails straight out and having tongues hanging out the other end to maximize space is nothing but sarcasm.

For the last time, there is not a secret exit from the bathroom. If by some miracle I beat you there and manage to get the door shut, it is not necessary to claw, whine, meow, try to turn the knob or get your paw under the edge and try to pull the door open. I must exit through the same door I entered. Also, I have been using the bathroom for years --canine or feline attendance is not required.

The proper order is kiss me, then go smell the other dog or cat's butt. I cannot stress this enough!

To pacify you, my dear pets, I have posted the following message on our front door:

To All Non-Pet Owners Who Visit & Like to Complain About Our Pets:

1. They live here. You don't.
2. If you don't want their hair on your clothes, stay off the furniture. (That's why they call it "fur"niture.)
3. I like my pets a lot better than I like most people.
4. To you, it's an animal. To me, he/she is an adopted son/daughter who is short, hairy, walks on all fours and doesn't speak clearly.

Remember: Dogs and cats are better than kids because they:

1. Eat less
2. Don't ask for money all the time
3 Are easier to train
4. Normally come when called
5. Never ask to drive the car
6. Don't hang out with drug-using friends
7. Don't smoke or drink
8. Don't have to buy the latest fashions
9. Don't want to wear your clothes
10. Don't need a gazillion dollars for college, and...
11. If they get pregnant, you can sell their children.

12.WELCOME TO OUR HOME.

2008 The Year of the RAT

I happen to be the sign of the RAT

Chinese New Year

The Sign of the Rat

An opportunist with an eye for a bargain, Rats tend to collect and hoard, but are unwilling to pay too much for anything. They are devoted to their families, particularly their children. Quick-witted and passionate, they are capable of deep emotions despite their cool exteriors. Their nervous energy and ambition may lead them to attempt more tasks than they are able to complete successfully. Rats are blessed with one of the best intellects going.
The sign of the Rat is the first one in the cycle giving Rat people exude great leadership qualities and are good at taking the lead. They don't mind a lot of responsibility and they demonstrate a strong presence that other people respect. For those with the Rat nature, status and monetary satisfaction are the greatest motivation.
The affect of the sign of the Rat is energetic, and demonstrates enough endurance to fight most any sickness. Yet, all Rats tend to be tense, full of nervous energy, and prone to stress. Yoga and meditation would benefit Rats by calming their aggressive natures and helping them manage stress.

Rats make good homemakers who are always willing to do household chores. Because this is a sign of acquisition, the Rat person's house is presumably bursting with various knick-knacks collected over the years. Most Rats are cheerful, domesticated individuals who find happiness at home with their family.

The Chinese say others should always listen to the advice of the Rat. Because of their intellect and observatory powers, Rat people possess prudence and perception. They can anticipate problems, and are always able to see the big picture. Status, money, title and recognition are important to the Rat. They have keen sense of observation that allow them to foresee upcoming business opportunities as well as potential occupational problems. The Rat makes a better boss than an employee. Rats work better in flexible situations where they can be freely creative.
Cunning and thrifty, Rats have a knack with money and are apt to save for rainy days. When capable, the Rat is a great money saver, and in strapped times he knows how to make something out of nothing or how to make things advantageous for himself.

Generally friendly and sociable, the Rat is one of the extroverts of the 12 Animal signs. They have a special gift for easing the minds of others. It is not surprising that Rats have a lot of friends. To the people they love, Rats can be amazingly charitable, popular and supportive. Although Rats like to be in the driver's seat, they do need partners who can keep up with their active lifestyles. Rat people are romantic, and are always happier to have someone to share with.

February Birthdays

Ooops...I better get this out:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JEFF (today)!

AND to any other family and friends who have birthdays this month:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to YOU!

This is SO sad!

Foreclosures in MN now affecting family pets, horses too

The increasing problem of home foreclosures has led to more abandoned pets as families are leaving their dogs, cats or horses behind as they move from houses they can no longer afford, animal rescue volunteers said.

"I'm getting skinny horses in here that people have walked away from," said Drew Fitzpatrick, director of the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation in Zimmerman.

Fitzpatrick said that in the past, abandoned horses were usually due to an owner's mental illness, divorce or cancer.

"Now it's bankruptcy and ARM foreclosure. Rural America is really starting to get punched," Fitzpatrick said.

Over the last two months, at least 51 of the 150 animals brought to the Rice County Humane Society were because of foreclosure, said Michelle DeWeese, who works at the shelter.

"We have owners who are so upset that they have to give up their animals because of foreclosure," she said.

More than 13,600 Minnesotans lost their homes to foreclosure last year, double that of 2006, according to RealtyTrac. The Humane Society of the United States issued a statement this month urging pet owners to take their animals with them.

Sadie Wakal, director of the Safe Sanctuary in Faribault, said the number of animals coming in due to foreclosures has pushed the shelter to its limit.

"We're foster based, so we're stretched for foster homes. We're begging and pleading and poking dogs in corners," Wakal said.

For horse owners already facing high feed costs, the problem is particularly acute. A federal ban on horse slaughterhouses in America recently shut down that option -- which once paid owners about $600 per horse when there was nowhere else to turn.

There have been reports of horses wandering the Florida Everglades and coal mines in Kentucky, where owners set them free to forage on their own.

A horse owner recently euthanized more than 80 horses, mostly Shetland ponies, in Grey Eagle, northwest of St. Cloud, because of rising feed costs and her own poor health.

"I loved my horses, I was their mother," said the owner, Gail Carlson, who said she was spending $2,000 a month on hay. "I couldn't just keep doing that."

Others are seeking help.

"All of our rescue groups are overwhelmed with horses," said Stephanie Valberg, director of University of Minnesota equine center.

Fitzpatrick said she got a call this week from the sheriff in Morrison County, who reported a herd of horses running free in the area.

"He just said it looks like another foreclosure," she said.

State officials say they plan to launch a series of round-table discussions later this winter to look for answers.

Pets are hidden victims of foreclosures

Hidden inside foreclosed homes across the nation are thousands of hidden victims of the mortgage crisis: Pets abandoned by their owners. As banks seize more and more properties, families are being forced to leave behind cherished animals which is overwhelming area shelters.

We visited S.A.F.E. (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) in Rice County today and found at least 10 dogs from families that went through foreclosures.

In Rice County alone, there were 270 mortgage foreclosures in 2007 that authorities handled. That is up from 150 foreclosures in 2006.

Pets suffer foreclosure pain

The mortgage foreclosure crisis is chasing more than people out of their homes. In Rice County Minnesota, animal shelters are seeing an extraordinary number of homeless pets.

At the Humane Society in Faribault, in December and January 51 out of 150 pets that arrived came from homes facing foreclosure. The pets include cats, dogs, ferrets and guinea pigs.

"We've had a few that were so upset at their foreclosure and having to give up their pet, that they actually came and visited their pet while it was here until it was adopted," said
Michelle DeWeese, Animal Health Care Manager.

The Rice County Sheriff's Department sees the number of foreclosures growing rapidly.
In 2007 there were 237 mortgage foreclosure sales. That's up more than 50% from the year before. And judging by the pace so far this year, the Sheriff's Department expects this year to be worse.

Back at the Humane Society there's a similar suspicion. "Probably going to get worse before it gets better," said DeWeese.

10 ways....

TEN WAYS TO BECOMING A BETTER EQUESTRIAN

10. Drop a heavy steel object on your foot. Don't pick it up right
away.Instead, shout, "Get Off, Stupid! GET OFF!"

9. Leap out of a moving vehicle and practice "relaxing into the fall." Roll
into a ball and spring lithely to your feet.

8. Learn to grab your checkbook and write out a $200 check without even
looking down.

7. Jog long distances carrying a halter and a carrot. Go ahead and tell the
neighbors what you are doing - they might as well know now.

6. Affix a pair of reins to a moving freight train and practice pulling to a
halt. Smile as if you are having fun.

5. Hone your fibbing skills: "See, moving hay bales is FUN!" and, "No,
really, I'm glad YOUR LUCKY PERFORMANCE and multi-million dollar horse won
the class. I am just thankful that MY HARD WORK and actual ability won me
second place."

4. Practice dialing your chiropractor while paralyzed to
the shoulder and one foot anchoring the lead rope of a frisky horse.

3. Borrow the US Army's slogan: Be All That You Can Be - bitten, thrown,
kicked, slimed, trampled, frozen...

2. Lie face down in a puddle of mud in your most expensive riding clothes
and repeat to yourself, "This is a learning experience. This is a learning
experience. This is . . ."

AND THE NUMBER ONE EXERCISE TO BECOME A BETTER EQUESTRIAN:

1. Remember, its never the horse's fault...* :-)

Heath Ledger

Brokeback Mountain star found dead

Heath Ledger

Heath Ledger was found dead Tuesday at a downtown Manhattan apartment, and police said drugs may have been a factor. The Australian-born actor was 28.

Police said Ledger was naked in his bed with an unknown number of sleeping pills near the body.

Ledger had an appointment for a massage at a residence in the tony SoHo neighborhood, NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said. A housekeeper who went to let him know the massage therapist had arrived found him dead at 3:26 p.m.

A large crowd of paparazzi and gawkers began gathering Tuesday evening outside the building on an upscale block, where several police officers guarded the door. The medical examiner's office planned an autopsy on Wednesday, spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said.

While not a marquee movie star, Ledger was a respected, award-winning actor who took his craft seriously rather than cashing in on his heartthrob looks. He was nominated for an Oscar for his performance as a gay cowboy in "Brokeback Mountain," where he met Michelle Williams, who played his wife in the film. The two had a daughter, Matilda, and lived together in Brooklyn until they split up last year.

Ledger most recently appeared in "I'm Not There," in which he played one of the many incarnations of Bob Dylan -- as did Cate Blanchett, whose performance in that film earned an Oscar nomination Tuesday for best supporting actress.

Ledger had finished filming his role as the Joker this year in "The Dark Knight," a sequel to 2005's "Batman Begins."

He's had starring roles in "A Knight's Tale" and "The Patriot," and played the suicidal son of Billy Bob Thornton in "Monster's Ball." He also played a heroin addict in the 2006 Australian film "Candy."

Before settling down with Williams, Ledger had relationships with actresses Heather Graham and Naomi Watts. He met Watts while working on "The Lords of Dogtown," a fictionalized version of a cult classic skateboarding documentary, in 2004.

Ledger was born in 1979 in Perth, in western Australia, to a mining engineer and a French teacher, and got his first acting role playing Peter Pan at age 10 at a local theater company. He began acting in independent films as a 16-year-old in Sydney and played a cyclist hoping to land a spot on an Olympic team in a 1996 television show, "Seat."

After several independent films, Ledger moved to Los Angeles at age 19 and co-starred opposite Julia Stiles in "10 Things I Hate About You," a teen comedy reworking of "The Taming of the Shrew." His movie career caught on soon after that, culminating with his Academy Award nomination for "Brokeback Mountain."

"Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan said earlier this month that Ledger's performance as the Joker would be wildly different than Jack Nicholson's memorable turn in 1989's "Batman."

"It was a very great challenge for Heath," Nolan had said. "He's extremely original, extremely frightening, tremendously edgy. A very young character, a very anarchic presence that taps into a lot of our basic fears and panic."

Horse Blanket Day

Once again I am sitting in front of the computer what I should be blogging or posting. We are just about to the middle of the month of a brand New Year and I have nothing to post. Nothing new, exciting....nothing!

The only thing that is happening this month is Brian's 27th birthday.

Oh, I did manage to finally try on this turnout blanket on 3 out of the 4 horses today. I am bracing for the COLD stuff. The horses...I just don't see that thick coat that they usually grow for the Winter. I bought this blanket on ebay and it is nice. So I walked out to the pasture and first tried it on Tori. It fit her to a tee, for now. She is now 3 years of age. She was such a good girl. This one I think is going to be so easy to train, which that will start this Spring. She is finally showing some growth and I know she still has some more growing to do. Next I tried the blanket on Ginger. The blanket was too small. I have had 72" on her before and the ones I have were too big. Must be the type of blanket and whoever makes it. The new one is 70" so now I have decided that I will purchase another blanket from the same place and hope that the new 72" will fit. Then I tried it on Grace. It would fit perfectly if it were an 1" longer....ARGH! So since the 70" doesn't fit properly, I think I am going to pick up another 72". These blankets...I love how they adjust on the front closure.

So that was about the extent of my day.

Jim Brandenburg

Renowned National Geographic photographer Jim Brandenburg is considered one of the premier wildlife photographers in the world. However, this Minnesota-based artist doesn't measure his success by the numerous national and international awards and honors he has received. Rather, he gleans a well-earned sense of satisfaction from a steadfast and long-term commitment to his almost mystical quest to explore and understand the wilderness. As he says, "Ever since I was a boy, I have had a passion for telling stories about the forest and the prairies."

Brandenburg took his first photograph at age fourteen, then further developed his photographic skills and style while majoring in art at the University of Minnesota. After college, Brandenburg worked for the Worthington Daily Globe in southern Minnesota learning the trade of the "hard news" photojournalist. While at the paper, he began freelancing for National Geographic Magazine, and joined this heralded publication as a contract photographer in 1978. An abbreviated list of Brandenburg's project for National Geographic include: "The Tallgrass Prairie," "The Canadian Rockies," "South Dakota Badlands," "At Home with the Arctic Wolf," and "Ellesmere Island Life in the High Arctic."

His photographs have appeared in Life, Newsweek, Time, The Smithsonian, and Geo, often on the covers of these magazines. His works in Manchuria was featured in a book about China, and his photography in the Highlands of Scotland appeared in Discovering Britain and Ireland. He has just published Images of Home, a personal and intimate collection of black and white photographs that depicts the many fascinating people and places in the author's home state, Minnesota.

Brandenburg was twice named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographer's Association (regarded as the "Oscar" for the industry), and in 1988, he was named Wildlife Photographer of the Year by the British Museum of Natural History and the BBC, sponsored by Kodak. In 1981, he was commissioned by the United States Postal Service to photograph and design a set of ten wildlife stamps which were released on May 14th of that year. And in 1991, he was honored with the Global 500 Environmental World Achievement Award from the United Nations Environment program which was presented to him by King of Coastal Sweden.

For more than twenty years, Brandenburg has worked in Canada, Alaska, Minnesota, China, and the former Soviet Union. In the spring of 1980, he discovered on Ellesmere Island in the high Arctic what be one of the last packs of wolves not ingrained with fear from an excessive proximity to man. Photographs from that trip resulted in his bestselling book, White Wolf (with text by Brandenburg), that continues to delight and inform wildlife enthusiasts. Brandenburg has also produced, directed, and was the cinematographer for the extraordinary popular 1988 National Geographic/BBC Television Documentary titled simply, "White Wolf," aired world-wide in more than 120 countries.

Today, the force that continues to fuel Brandenburg's photography is his ever-deepening fascination with the wolf, a romance he pursues daily from his rural Northern Minnesota home near the Canadian border, also home territory for the Gray, or, as it is also called, the Timber Wolf.

Brandenburg speaks of the "elusive" nature of wolves, and the challenge that creates in photographing them. On a planet threatened by mankind's technological excess, Brandenburg's own "dances with wolves," falls perfectly in line with other environmentally-concerned movements and individuals as the expression of only hope for saving the earth, and ourselves as a species. As the photographer says, "I'm interested in people's relationship with wolves...As much as it touches a feared aspect in us, the wolf as a symbol of wildness that we're trying to reconcile and make an agreement with..."
